Some political musings

~Does anyone besides me think that there are way too many polls being taken? I just don't find all that prognostication helpful; to the contrary, I think it muddies the waters. And all the talk last week that Clinton should think about quitting if she lost NH? Really, wasn't that a bit premature with only a couple of small states having voted?

~As grateful as I am for a strong slate of Democratic candidates, I'm beginning to believe that it is unfortunate that the first viable female candidate and the first viable Black candidate are pitted against one another. I really believe that both Clinton and Obama are too complicated, too nuanced to be characterized by gender and race and that there are too many other issues to focus on for this race to hinge on those factors. But I am afraid that is where we're headed, despite both candidates saying they didn't want to go there.

~I started out wanting to be excited about Clinton. But I realized that as much as I wanted to support a woman for president, I just couldn't get behind her. Now I'd like to catch the Obama excitement, but I'm just not there yet. I don't want to believe that I actually have become that cynical, but I just don't think that he can be as great an agent of change as he proclaims. I guess I need to read more about his positions, or better yet, see him in person.

~And what about Edwards?

~It's a long time til November. And even longer until January 20, 2009.

This morning in a sleep hazed state I heard someone say (on NPR)... If we can't predict who is in front and don't have polls that we can reliably talk about, what will talk about?

I thought to myself... Uhm, what the candidates think about the issues? Is that a radically novel thought?

I am having a hard time getting engaged in the election at all. I really want to like someone, but they all seem sort of phony and useless in the end. Plus, I was so disappointed in the last two elections, that I am just petrified of being let down by the american public again. sigh
