Random bits from the city

~It is cold here. COLD. I knew it would be cold and I brought my long wool coat, but knowing it will be so doesn't prepare you for the feel of the icy wind roaring down long streets and whipping against your face.

~Despite the cold I went out and did some errands this morning. It is always interesting to watch how people react to the cold--or more precisely, dress for it. Most people were bundled up with scarves and hats and gloves, but there were a number of people who seemed oblivious to the cold--coats unbuttoned, no hat, no scarf (and these were not people who couldn't have afforded such items.) I put gloves on at the first sign of cold weather so it always a mazes me when people go around with bare hands.

~ This afternoon I went down to Wall Street to Trinity Church where the conference I'm attending is being held. The conference is interfaith, and is dealing with the issues of religion and violence. I signed up for the option to participate in small group theological reflections, and that was the first thing we did. My group (so far--not everyone was there tonight) seems fascinating and the discussion was rich.

~The Presiding Bishop was the preacher at evensong. She is a tall woman, and she is an imposing presence, but not in the overpowering way some people are. She has a dignity and grace about her that are impressive.

~Tomorrow will be a long day, so I'm going to download the few pictures I took and then go to bed early--something I often say I'm going to do, but rarely follow through on.

It is ridiculously cold here. I can't go out without completely bundling up: hats, gloves, scarf, tights under my jeans, the whole deal. My son, however, hates the feel of gloves and refuses to wear them. Instead, he just pulls his arms into his coat and looks like he doesn't have hands. It's weird, but it works for him. Brrr..I can't wait for spring!

The wind is the worst. Twenty degrees no wind is infintely better for me than 40 and windy.
