~A big juicy watermelon, ice cold and cut in half outside at my grandmother's house. Instead of slicing it she just gave each kid a spoon and told us to have at it. Delightfully messy and delicious.
~Lying on the floor in my parents' bedroom (the only room in the house with air conditioning) when it was really hot outside, reading books. It was dim and dark and cool.
~Playing in the rain in our swimsuits. There was a long narrow walkway down one side of out house, and if it rained hard enough the water make a small river there.
~Heat so thick and damp it felt like you could cut it.
~Playing in the basement while the woman who helped my mother did the ironing. Playing "wagon train" with a circle of boxes.
~Swinging as high as I could on my swing set and singing "Oh what a beautiful morning" --my dad listened to lots of show music and he must have been listening to "Oklahoma!" at that point.
~Catching light bugs after dark.
~Going to the Tastee Freeze to get lemon custard ice cream. And making hand cranked peach ice cream at home.
~all these memories come from the place I lived until I was eight and a half.

wow. my mother played the music from oklahoma all the time. we had a high swingset, and ate watermelon outside in summer, too. but we were in los angeles, no rain or lightning bugs like in the south.
