Connections

I went FB stalking tonight looking for high school friends. I didn't find very many, but I did find some names from past that left me feeling weirded out...people I haven't thought of in a long time, and don't really want to be friends with--just seeing their pictures brings back too many memories.

And then I looked at my friend requests and saw that my former stepdaughter had friended me. That's a piece of family that I've never blogged about. The Kid's dad had two daughters when we got married, just a bit older than my kids, but I lost track of them after he left (let's just say all those relationships were strained), and honestly I was surprised she friended me after all these years (almost 14). But I think it is a nice surprise. OTOH, since the Kid hasn't seen his dad in 10 years or so, it could open a whole 'nother can of worms. We'll see.

It's just funny how all these connections pop up, and how tangled our webs of relationships are.

Huh, that *is* wormy, possibly. We have gone to the other extreme. When Pure Luck and I got married and had a reception a few days later, my ex's family came, all to make it seem normal to the kids, to show we all continued in relationship. It seemed like a good idea at the time, but now I wonder.

families can be tangled, all right. i hope this leap of faith works out for you, RDM.

songbird, i've admired that you have been able to keep a connection for the kids, and imagine it must be a real strain at times.

for what it's worth, i think shifts in the family structure can be very hard on kids. there is a sore spot in my heart because my stepmother severed relations after my dad died. she married my dad when i was an adult, but my kids grew up knowing her as their grandma. and then, she just wasn't.

my husband and i are trying to keep some kind of relationship [even a distant one] going with our sweet young nephew; beloved's sister divorced his dad, and then she lost custody, and that whole thing was pretty ugly. thorny. but the little guy didn't ask to be in this situation.
