Skype--it's very cool. Downloaded the free software, bought a headset that is "Skype certified" (although I'm not sure that certification is really necessary) and had my first overseas conversation via computer with LD#1.
I will admit that I am not much of a phone caller; call me and I'll talk but I just don't pick up the phone to call anyone that often. And the idea that one can call overseas without it being a Big Deal was still new to me when LD went to Korea last year. So our phone calls were few and mostly made by her, even though I missed talking with her. Skype makes it so easy (and free) that hopefully we'll be talking more often.

LD sounded like she was right here. Her internet connection isn't totally reliable right now and we were cut off once, but with reliable internet it should be fine, I think. At least as reliable as a cell phone, perhaps more so considering the distance involved.
Thank you! My sister and two closest friends are moving abroad in August, and I've been hysterical about not being able to talk to them without using up my monthly budget in one phone call.
So glad you are getting to talk to your daughter now. I find it both excitinig and hard that we live in a world where friends and family spread so far away so easily...
hell yeah! tele-commies are on to it though- so i hope it will stay free. we're in ireland with a one year old, so we have a web cam and my mom calls and just watches the baby crawl around, or giggle- we spend hours just sitting while g-ma sings to the baby, waves, tries to get him to say grandma. it rocks and makes us seem not so far away. The time change stills makes it a bit tricky- but it's nice.
been enjoying your blog for a while now- introduced via casey.
thanks!
