President Bush is apparently threatening to veto a military appropriations bill because it was amended to require prisoners ("detainees") to be treated in accordance to the Army field manual on interrogation and the UN Convention Against Torture and Cruel Treatment. Read more about this here. Bush and Cheney have proposed all sorts of other "compromises" that would basically allow them to permit torture whenever they feel like it.
I am ashamed to be an American when things like this come up. How low can we sink? How can we argue that torture is acceptable when is works to the advantage of the US and not acceptable when it is others doing it to us? This just sickens me.
Meanwhile the Senate passed spending cuts yesterday that will have a serious negative impact on Medicare and other social programs. Supposedly this is to pay for Katrina relief. But how about rolling back those tax cuts? How about bringing our troops home from Iraq? How about paying for things that way?

Can I add not drilling in the Artic National Wildlife Refuge? That was also passed by the Senate yesterday.
