Horrified

~Horrified by recent campus shootings, a state lawmaker here has come up with a proposal in keeping with the Taurus .22-caliber pistol tucked in her purse: Get more guns on campus.

~I'm horrified by campus shootings, too, but I'm more horrified by the notion that college students should arm themselves for protection. Please, no more guns!!

You beat me to putting up that article. What dimbulb (that's being polite) would even propose such a lame idea? Cheez.

That has to be one of the dumbest ideas I've ever heard.

i'm an old fart now, with a daughter living in a college dorm, and a son living with a buncha young guys in the cheap part of a local city known for violence.

back in the day, i once ran a college dormitory. fads may change, but there is no way to convince me that college students -- the brilliant hope for the future -- should be packing heat. they can cause enough panic, destruction, and anxiety without weapons, thank you.

there is absolutely no justification for civilians to have guns in city settings and social settings, in my opinion. a classmate of mine nearly died in 9th grade, when he and his best friend were playing around with a handgun. so many stupid crimes go bad, just because someone has a gun in his hand. random shootings kill so many bystanders. just last year, a doctor who treated my family for a long time was killed, along with her young children, by her husband, who committed suicide -- he bought the guns just 2 blocks from the doctor's office, at the only gun shop in town.

i. hate. guns.

When I wrote about the spate of campus shootings on my education blog, I got the same kind of comment.

When will people realize that more guns will not solve this problem? It has been my experience that people who carry guns are likely to suffer from persecution complexes or paranoia. There are police officers who go their entire careers without unholstering their guns, perhaps because they know that simply waving a gun in the face of an attacker won't do anything but escalate the situation. If you mean to stop someone, having them become aware that you are armed will only increase the potential for mayhem.

In the recent shootings at the city council meeting at Kirkwood, Missouri, the first two people the shooter took out were armed police officers. More weaponry will simply increase the number of tragic accidents, and make it easier for criminals to get their hands on guns.

I actually have some experience with guns, but I would welcome limitations on access and ammunition. Sane people hesitate before using weaponry. That's what makes us law-abiding people.

thought of this thread when i saw some breaking news this morning: several dorms at a competitive university were evacuated overnight, because a freshman had partially assembled pipe bombs in his dorm room. what was he thinking? http://www.sacbee.com/749/story/764340.html

anyway, probably would not be a good idea to put someone like this in possession of a weapon that is ready to go.
