~Dark chocolate
~Mr. LS's uncle is executive chef for a pretty swanky group of restaurants in NYC. About the time I graduated from seminary, NSLS and Mr. LS came to the city and we went to one of those restaurants in what has become one of the new hot areas for night life, not far from where I lived. And we were given the royal treatment. We didn't order anything....food just kept appearing on the table. Really I think we sampled most of what was on the menu. And of course, it was all delicious. Amazing, really.
~I've never been treated so royally. Or had so much food. It was wonderful, but honestly I started to feel a bit guilty about the excess by the time we were finished.
~A tomato sandwich--must be a very fresh garden tomato, with lots of real mayonnaise and a bit of salt and pepper. When I was a kid it would've been on squishy white bread.
~Or chunky peanut butter on saltine crackers with a class of real iced tea (lemon and sugar of course) or a coke. My bf and I used to have that for a snack and I still do.
~ Baked pineapple and cheese casserole
~When I was in 10th grade I went on a Girl Scout trip to Atlantic City (before it was transformed into its current state). We stayed at a big hotel and one day there was a buffet for lunch. Nothing was very appetizing, honestly, but there was a large tray of cold meat, so we made sandwiches. About half way through the meal, someone told us what we were eating was tongue. EWWWWWW!
~I've mostly avoided things like that, because even when I ate meat, I eschewed organs and game animals and the like. But in Iceland I COULD have eaten sheep's head or birds that were hung out to dry--literally (I forget what they were called). And my grandfather used to eat calf brains with his scrambled eggs. Makes me queasy just to remember it.
This thread make me remember again how much the way I eat has changed since I was a kid, and what different food memories my kids will have compared to mine--that may be worth its own post.

Baked pineapple and cheese sounds yummy!
I love tomato sandwiches, too! So delicious!
We were just talking about about pineapple casserole the other night...I need to make that soon...
I've never had tongue...nor do I wish to try!
But the pineapple casserole sounds delicious...
My grandma used to make tongue regularly for Shabbat dinners. Yes, this is how future vegetarians are created. The memory of the texture of it still makes me shudder...
that pineapple and cheese casserole sounds wonderful. Great play!
So a tomato sandwich is like a BLT but just a MT, right?
i like your thoughts on how our eating habits growing up and what our children will have are different...i'll be anxious to read that next post.
A tomato sandwich on white bread is one of my summer favorites. It is the only time I buy white bread. I say summer, because garden fresh tomatoes are the only ones with the real tomato taste I crave.
Great play.
Nice play! I am confused about the pineapple and cheese. What else goes into this? I suspect it's like pineapple pizza only different? Hmmm....
I'm not really a pineapple fan, so I can't really imagine a pineapple and cheese casserole (I don't get the pizza thing either).
I'm so with you on the organs and offal and so on. Blech!
It's interesting how food ways change generationally -- I'll look forward to your future post!
Pineapple cheese casserole--I'll post the recipe later, but basically it's pineapple chunks(drained) mixed with a little flour and sugar and lots of shredded cheese, topped with crushed ritz crackers mixed with melted butter and baked. It's been a family favorite since my mother started making it for holidays, probably 20+ years ago.
I think that were I to eat pineapple and cheese casserole, it would be one of the strangest things I ever ate...but, maybe it really is good! I might try it when you post the recipe.
