In which I expose my un-hipness

(and ignorance?)

I have been known to announce publicly that I will not let technology age me....I text, I blog, I'm on Facebook, I can't imagine life without my computer and cell phone, whatever. I am very impatient with people my age (and I'm NOT that old) who throw up their hands and say, "I'm just too old for that..."--that being email, or blogs, or just using a computer for more than word processing.

But I have to admit that when it comes to popular culture I am out of it. I haven't had a TV in ten years, I don't go to the movies much, I get my news from those bastions of liberal-ness (ha!) NPR and the NY Times. I know there is probably a lot out there I miss.

So when the Kid showed me a Youtube video of Ann Coulter I was a bit flabbergasted. I mean, I 've heard of her. I know she's wicked conservative and inflammatory. But I'd never seen her. But now that I have, I'm left to wonder--how can anyone take her seriously? Seriously?

The other part of this confession, for which I may get booted from teh blogosphere for my lack of .....whatever, is that I've never seen either Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert, either. Yes, I've heard of them, but I've never seen them. So when the Kid tells me that Stephen Colbert is running for President I have to google him to see what he looks like, and you know, read up.

Slinking off in embarrassment....

ETA...I likened Colbert for President to Pat Paulsen for President....of course the Kid didn't know who I was talking about...and I guess I was about the Kid's age when he first ran.

Oh Mama. It's okay. But maybe, maybe you should get a tv and comedy central so you can better acquaint yourself with both Jon and Stephen. :)

I, too, have never seen either Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert. Sadly, though, I have seen an interview with Ann Coulter, and I feel the same way you do. Can anyone take her seriously? Not only do I not agree with anything she says, but she gives a terrible interview and as near as I can tell, she is actually quite stupid.

I thought of Pat Paulsen, too, while I was watching Colbert on Stewart's Daily Show. It's crazy how things come full circle over time. So many times I've wondered if this is what it felt like while we were in Vietnam. I was a toddler during that time but it seems like a parallel universe.

Ann Coulter is an an embarassment and as far as I can tell her only value to the Conservative movement is to say the idiotic things others think. She's just willing to take the heat for things no one else will say.

p.s. I think you would really enjoy Jon Stewart. He's a gem, really!

Clips from both shows (Daily Show and Colbert Report) are put up on Commedycentral.com daily (and probably more on YouTube). You really should acquaint yourself. Spot-on political satire.

As for Ms Coulter...I don't see how anyone can take her seriously either, but some do. My sister adores her. Sometimes I wonder if she is actually a satirist herself in an effort to point out the more outrageous and ridiculous bits of ultra-conservative agenda. How else could anyone justify some of the things she says? But it never was remotely funny and she just keeps going and going.

I try to avoid Ann Coulter as often as possible. I read about her in the news and have been lucky enough to never have caught her actually talking somewhere.

Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert however are worth their minutes in gold. Track them down and watch them however you can. Funny funny funny.

I've never seen Ann Coulter either. But I do like the chance to see JOn Stewart on cable when I'm travelling and in hotels w/comedy central. Very funny.

I wish I DIDN'T know about Ann Coulter!

I too first thought of Pat Paulsen when Stephen Colbert said he was running for President. He is not as laconic as was Pat Paulsen.

Ditto all of the other comments about Jon Stewart and Ann Coulter. I see Ann Coulter much more than I would like as she is a frequent guest on a talk show my husband likes. I want to rage when I see that little cross she wears around her neck to announce that she is a Christian. When she rants about all the people she hates, sure makes those of us who try to love our enemies (as Jesus tells us) as well as our neighbors look really bad.
