The Cranberry Wars

I love cranberries, and I make wicked good cranberry sauce (if I do say so myself). Although I grew up eating the canned jellied stuff, it really seems pretty fake to me these days.

My sole contribution to Thanksgiving dinner this year was cranberry sauce. But along with my sauce, there was a dish with the good old jellied stuff, complete with ridges from the can sides--because a couple of members of the extended family will eat ONLY what come out of the can.

Needless to say, there was a running debate on the relative merits (and the lack thereof) of homemade whole berry sauce and the standard canned jellied sauce. And a lot of jokes.

But the funniest part was when the leftovers came out for Friday lunch. When the container of jelled sauce was opened we found a new word inscribed in it: "Ziploc" (from the lid of the container) Now I ask you, what REAL food is that impressionable?

my dad insisted on the canned jellied cranberry sauce. he called my grandmother's cranberries "sticks and stones." we only do the real thing at my house, now.

It wouldn't be thanksgiving without your cranberry sauce! It was yummy!

re: the imprinted cranberry sauce -- "Pectin is OUR FRIEND." Do you make the raw cranberry sauce -- ground up cranberries and oranges?

I looooove that you have a photo of the ziploc-ed canned sauce. Too too priceless.

I always ate the canned kind as a kid. But now only the homemade stuff for me! I dunno...the 70s-80s seems like the age of 'if it comes in a can, it must be better!' or something.

We had both the cooked whole berry and the raw cranberry-orange kind. Both are really yummy. My husband had the cran-orange one as a kid ... his mom didn't really buy into the easy! fast! convenient! schtick I guess. She's also the reason he makes pie crust and spaghetti sauce from scratch. :)
